THE STAR OF CANADA

ABANDONMENT ASSURED. By Telegraph—Press A*»ooiati»n. Gisborne, Last Night. The position of the Star of Canada is unchanged. The lightering of her cargo has been briskly carried out all day, and is expected to be completed to-morrow. The men on shore will complete signing off to-morrow morning. A number signed off to-day, but others, under the impression that the company must take them back to London, the Star of Canada's port of departure, declined to sign off. It is expected that this difficulty will be overcome to-mor-row. Captain Taylor, of the London Salvage Association, will arrive in the morning, and it is understood that the process of abandonment will then be formally completed. A preliminary enquiry into the stranding was opened in camera by the Collector of Custon- this morning, and the evidence of Captain Hart was taken. It is expected that the evidence of th« officers will be completed to-morrow, and then the evidence will be forwarded to Wellington, the Magisterial enquiry being held later.
