A RECORD FOG. By Cabla—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, July 2. There was a record fog to-day. The ferries were dislocated, and one boat collided with the wharf, without seri- i ous results. Others, and arriving and departing vessels, anchored about the harbor till the fog lifted. Passengers were aboard for hours. QUEENSLAND FINANCES. Brisbane, July 2. The revenue for the year is £5,989,347, an increase of £257,312, leaving a surplus of £23,654. SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH. Melbourne, July 2. Dr. Schachner, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Jena, who died there in March, bequeathed 20,000 marks (£1000), the interest wherefrom is to be devoted to Australian sociological research. A student from Jena will visit Australia every sixth year and publish a report. A FORGED CHEQUE. Sydney, July 2. 'A forged cheque for £SOO, purporting to t>e drawn on a leading auctioneering firm, was cashed by a bank last week when presented by a lady. Recently the police were anonymously warned that a gang of expert American forgera would visit Australia. VICTORIAN DEFENCE. Melbourne, July 2. To-day 20,000 senior cadets advance to militia rank, bringing the first line of the Commonwealth's military defence t0'40,000 men, while concurrently 14,000 lads join the senior cadets. THE SYDNEY JUGGERNAUTS. Sydney, July 2. A man was killed yesterday, making the twenty-third fatality on the city and suburban trams since the beginning of the year.
