THE STAR OF CANADA
THE STAR OF CANADA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisobrne, Saturday. The weather continues fine for salvage operations at the Star of Canada. Pumping was continued till 10 o'clock last night, and the water was reduced 10ft., where it was easily held whilst timber shorings were inserted between decks, near the foremast, to take the weight, where the vessel shows signs of sagging, and it is thought the main damage lies. The Terawhiti was brought alongside first thing this morning and a start made to couple up her pumping gear. Pumping operations are to be commenced this afternoon. The diver made a further investigation amidship on the port side'and found the vessel resting on a flat papa reef abreast the funnel. He could walk under her engine-room. With a strain on the anchors and the working of the bow into the papa the vessel has moved forward slightly, and with the grinding on the reef her bow has subsided about four feet since Tuesday. The hawse pipes are now under water at high tide. The crew have abandoned the forecastle. Mr. Daniels, the Union Company's salvage expert, arrived this morning, and- after examination is hopeful of the success of the salvage operations. As a result of a conference those in authority decided this morning to immediately proceed with lightering the balance of the cargo. The Star of India has arrived to take the Star of Canada's loading, and the salvaged cargo will be transferred to her.
