THURSDAY COMPETITION. ,-. r.~ - ■

The third round of the senior compe- | titions was opened on Thursday under j vile weather conditions, which simply | meant that the game was a mud scramble. Clifton journeyed to Stratford and went under to the local team by 3 points to nil. Stratford have now only to bcat.Tukapa at New Plymouth next Thursday to assure themselves of the championship in the Thursday division this end. and with Loveridge Steele and others absent this should not be a difficult task. The result of the Saturday competition is still in doubt. Star, who have a match yet to play with Okato to complete the second round, are leading from Hovers by a point, whilst Okato, with a match yet to play, arc a point behind Rovers." The ultimate issue is very much in doubt, but the prospects of the countrv team winning are very rosy and would be certain but for the fact that Carey, their best forward, who is the equal of any in the competition, is liors de combat through a dislocated; elbow probably for- the -pest" of "the season), ;hilst Eustace, another fine type of a jrward, will also not be available, owing o an accident, for a few games. The earguard has been strengthened by the lclusion of Bruce Anderson. who_ a few easons ago was a back much above the ve'rage, and the country team can be xpected to put up a big fight, especially s most of the matches are-td'be played n their own ground:"'Star, who'have ad difficulty all through in raising a enior team* have lost the services of Jreatbatch and fimulie. so thev may lot be able to raise a tcai 1 to journey o Okato to-dav. If that is so, Okato nd Hovers should fight out the ultimate ssue, and their next meeting should be forth journeying down the Coast to see, is each have" a win and a loss to their redit. The position of the teams in the competition is as follows: The following will represent Fitzroy n their match against Rovers, to be ilayed on the Recreation Grounds tolay, commencing at 3 p.m.: —J. Skipper, D.'Koupu. T. O'Carroll. M. Skipper. S. Martin, K. Tito, U. Kalni, B. Atutalhi, Buxton, Mangu. Tutai, 11. Carran, K. Bellringer, J. Watson, J. Broughton. Emergencies, S. Skipper, W. Fratt, Tamlti. Football in tlie Waikato must be very strenuous. Jn a recent match at Hamilton on Saturday, there was quite a collection of casualties, one player getting his leg broken, another his nose broken, md a third his knee twisted. The annual football fixtures between the seniors and jirniors of the New Flymouth and Stratford High Schools on the Recreation Ground to-day should prove very attractive. Collegiate and secondary school football generally provides fine displays of the grand old game that rouse the spectators to enthusiasm, and prove that the outcry against Rugby is not duo to the game but to the manner in which it is played. Mr R. H. Coltman, a well-known Dannevirke referee, has taken up his residence at Tataraimaka and has expressed his willingness to join the Referees' Association and assist in the .Saturday

competition. I Star and Rovers put up a willing and ( strenuous game on Saturday, wit* "o I "beg pardons" about it. Si»*- were | somewhat handicapped in the matter of \ hacks.' They started witli only four hacks, which were later increased to six, but fircatbatch was lamed in the first spell, ami this still further handicapped them. Their forwards played a solid game. Hovers' forwards played 'well, but were outclassed. Their backs did well when they were given a chance, and were a nippy lot. For the victors, Hawkins played a hard game in the. pack. Tie is a very cool hand and has plent} 7 of weight. Uewar led his pack to victory in good style. Oliartevis, as usual, made good use of his feet. MeAllum, at wing three-quarter, played a dashing game, and was more than once the salvation of his side. Goudie also played a good game on the wing. He handles well and has a good turn of speed. In short, he is a likely scorer and wants a lot of watching. Clarke was not a great success at full-back, but he is not in form, which may account for much. fllccson, while he plays a good game and gets down to rushes, still preserves his old failing of holding on too long. He shows promise of being a useful half, fStannering, at centre three-quarter, showed Hashes of good play. I'aekard. at wing forward, also played a useful game, and his pace saved a certain try on one occasion. .[''or Rovers, Ucid. at half, plaved a sterling game. lie is plucky and sure, and stopped rush after rush. Webster was responsible for many passing rushes and did not spare himself, going down in great style. The- (Irant brothers played a good game on the ( liree-(|uarter line, though they did not Lave many chances. Xewall was very

safe at full-back, and has much improv- I ed. He took the ball well and put in j some good line-kicking. Mclsaae, Kil- - gour and Thompson were the pick of the green-ancl-white forwards. Thompson especially played a sterling game. Star deserved their victory, and Rovers put up a good fight. In the light of Hawkins' performance in the goal-kick-ing line, it is difficult to know why kicks do not come his way in the representative matches, when Stohr is not available.
