Emery and Ilazlitt began the bowling to. Fry and Woolley. In the second over Fry was run out in attempting a second run from a faulty stroke in the slips. Bardsley returned the ball to Carkeek. Fry had made 42 in 95 minutes, and hit a seven and five fours. Woolley had scored 11. —Five for 246. Foster filled the vacancy. The fielding was faulty. Whitty replaced Emery at 245. Woolley made nline of his first over, and in the next over was taken in the slips. Foster had not scored. —Six for 255. Hearne came in next. Foster sent a skier to mid-off after twenty minutes' play, Hearne having scored 10. —Seven for 285. Smith faced the bowling next, and 300 was hoisted in 235 minutes. With ten runs added England declared the innings closed after four hours' batting.
With 330 minutes to play, the Aus-' tralians sent Jennings and Kelleway to face Foster and Barnes. The field was closely placed. Each bowler opened with a maiden over. Jennings was struck on the leg by Foster, and Kelleway nearly played Barnes on in his second" over., Jennings was confident and admirable, and had scored 19 when Kelleway had not scored. His strong defence and the smart fielding prevented him scoring. Twenty runs went up in 30 minutes. Kelleway put Barnes away to leg for' three, and nearly gave a chance to Fry after 35 minutes. Barnes was getting awkward, and Foster had sent down eight overs for six runs, when, in his tenth over, Jennings was caught at the wickets after 45 minutes. Kelleway had made five. —One for 27. Macartney filled the gap and Dean replaced Barnes at 42. Macartney survived an appeal for leg-before from Barnes when he had made a single, anu made a dangerous stroke in the slips off Dean when he had scored nine, and also had a narrow escape of being run out when 12, Hobbs at cover making a brilliant return. Two loose bails from Foster hoisted 41 in 80 minutes. At 53 Hearne replaced Foster. At the luncheon adjournment Macartney had scored 20 and Kelleway 20. —One for 59 for 95 minutes' play. On resuming there were 14,000 persons present. Macartney continued steadily. A pretty four in the slips and a single off Barnes brought up his 50 in 85 minutes. He received an ovation. Runs kept coming from Macartney, and the century went up ,in 130 minutes. Foster "then replaced Dean. Foster was bowling badly, and Macartney brought the century up in 130 minutes with a pull for six. Dean replaced Foster at 122, and Hearne took Barnes' place at 125. Macartney was brilliant all round the wicket. Wlien Macartney had made 77 Kelleway had only reached 24. A four drive off Hearne was registered amidst erics of "Be careful!" and 150 was hoisted in 155 minutes. The followon was averted in 165 minutes amid cheering. Foster relieved Hearne at 165, and the change was effective. Macartney was takn at the wickets on the leg side in Foster's third over after 135 minutes of glorious and faultless cricket. ■ His scored included a six and thirteen fouTs. He had a great reception. Kelleway had made 36. —Two for 173. The partnership added 140. Bardsley came next.. The- weather was beautiful and the wicket easy. Barnes relieved Dean at 175. Kelleway did not score for 20 minutes, and there were ironical cheers when he hit a four to leg off Barnes. At the tea adojurnment the scores were: Kelleway 44, Bardsley 11.—Two for 194.
On. resuming 18.000 people were present. Foster and Rhodes bowled. Two byes signalled the second century for 235 minutes' play. Dean replaced Foster at 21". Nine runs later Bardsley, in trying to pull a short ball, was iegbefore. He had not played with his usual confidence. He was in 85 minutes. —Three for 226. Gregory filled tha vacancy, and after scoring six saw his partner bowled by a low ball. He batted for 275 minutes with limitless patience. His innings was chanceless. He was frequently barracked. —Four for 233.
This made Rhodes' hundredth wicket in test matches. Smith was the incomer, and saw ten added before Gregory was ■finely taken right-handed in the slips.— Five for 243. Matthews was the incomer, and in the same over played on to Dean. —Six for 243, Hazlitt filled the vacancy, and runs coming freely Hearne relieved Dean at 202. Twenty were added when Hazlitt was bowled and stumps were drawn. Smith showed fine driving. The Prince of Wales was present during the afternoon. Twelve thousand five hundred paid for admission. At the conclusion of the match Sir G. Reid presented Gregory on the occasion of his fiftieth test match, with a silver cup and a purse of 200 sovereigns, which it is hoped will be increased before the fund is closed.
