ECONOMIC QUESTIONS
UNSATISFACTORY STATISTICS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. An emphatic protest was made at the Cost of Living Commission to-day by Dr. Mcllray, Inspector of Schools, regarding the difficulty in obtaining data regarding economic questions. "The statistics, as far as economic matters are concerned, are verv unsatisfactory," said Dr. Mcllray. "These statistical investigations should be carried out by competent people. For instance, not very long ago. I bad to get figures regarding wages from the police station." (Laughter.) Dr. Mcllrnv further remarked that he considered (here should be co-ordination among diffeivit departments. He suggested that, a trained slatistician should be engaged from England or America. Although our investigators had been engaged in this work for some time, the country was only a young one. and it would be n good thins: to obtain the services of an expert in order that he might teach officials how to deal with data from a scientific basis.
