STORMY WEATHER

THE DREDGE MAUL By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. The unpleasant weather which was experienced last week became much worse on Saturday night, when the wind veered to the south. A heavy gale blew through out the night, and continued with more or less violence on Sunday. Stormy weather is reported on both east and west coasts, and shipping has been inter- | fered with to a considerable extent. The Gisborne Harbor Board's dredge ! Maui, which has been waiting a favorI able opportunity to sail for Auckland, was dispatched early yesterday morning. In view of the loss of the Manchester recently, insurance companies were loth to accept any risk on the vessel, and some difficulty was met with in finding a crew. Considerable surprise and some perturbation is expressed in shipping circles at the Maui having left port in auch unsettled weather, and her arrival will be anxiously awaited. She was re- ; ported at East Cape at !) p.m. yesterday, and passed Ghiwa at 1 p.m. to-day bound north. STATEMENT BY GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD. Gisborne, Monday. Ini regard to the message sent out from Auckland referring to the dredger Maui, the harbor authorities state that special meteorological reports have been received for some days before the dredger sailed. They deny that they had any difficulty in getting a crew as stated, the only 'difficulty being that it was found that the men had to be unionists, and steps in this direction were taken. As regards the statements ■■ about the Maui going uninsured ( the explanation is that the board considered Lloyd's offer (about £1000) for the £25,000 of cover as prohibitive.
