WANGANUI IMPROVEMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. An important proposal came before the Borough Council this evening, when an application was made for permission to erect an elevator at Durietown. an important suburb of Wanganui. The elevator is in the form of a tunnel and shaft, the latter being 202 feet high. It is proposed to have an electrically worked lift. The scheme means a lot to dwellers on the hill. : The council considered the application and granted private rights *for 35 years, the council reserving the option of taking it over after ten years, scheme was originated by Mr. E. Grow, engineer instructor at the Technical College. GIFT. % Wanganui, Last Night. A handsome gift was-made to the borougji to-nigh*, in the shape of 81 acres ofl land, which were presented by the Matipo Land Company. The land, which is situated at Aramoho, is valued at £SOOO. It ijj of a hilly nature, and ha* natural springs and clumps of bush, making it suitable for botanical gardens. RAILWAJTMEN'S GRIEVANCES. Wanganui, Last Night. At a special meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Railway Officers' Institute a resolution wag carried supporting the action of the recent delegation to the Minister of Railways, and .protesting against the recommendations of the last Railway Committee on the officers' petition not being given effect to. The meeting also expressed the opinion that Mr. Myers' offer to the recent deputation was totally inadequate to alleviate the pressing needs of the first division. A resolution wag also carried warning parents against flowing their sons to enter a service so" inadequately paid, and whose so much behind other branches of the Civil Service
