A DETERMINED SUICIDE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Carterton, Tuesday. J. T. Smart, a settler of Longbush, Gladstone, committed suicide yesterday afternoon by cutting his throat with a butcher's knife. He left home to muster BOine sheep, and, being absent a long time, his ten-year-old son was eent to find him. He discovered the body near a clump of scrub, the throat being cut from ear to ear. The deceased leaves a wife and seven children. He recently exchanged his farm for one further north. There is no cause yet assigned for the deed. The body was brought to Carterton at 4 o'clock this morning.

DEATH OF A PRISONER. Wellington, Tuesday. At the Coroner's inquiry into the death of James Johnstone, the prisoner who died while being removed from the gaol to the hospital, medical evidence was to the effect that deceased suffered from kidney disease, for which he had been treated in gaol. A verdict was returned accordingly. A MYSTERIOUS DEATH. Wellington, Tuesday. Mr. G. Z. Quarrie, a local business man, a well-known member of the Druids' Lodge, died suddenly last night. B.V was seen by his wife going to his room with what appeared to be a glass o]f m}lk. A little later lie was found dying. Doctors, who were unable to help the victim, noticed a strong smell resembling .prussic acid. A PAUPER'S DEATH.

Auckland, Tuesday. An elderly man named AVilliam Carton, living by himself in Lane street, idled suddenly in a building close «t|o Queen street. The room and bedding were in a shockingly filthy condition. EXPLOSION OF MOLTEN BRASS. A young man named Wood, employed by Okey and Roljo, sustained a rather severe accident yesterday afternoon. He dropped a cold block of brass into a pot of molten brass, and an explosion immediately followed. He was badly burnt about the face and head. He was attended to by Dr. Walker, and subsequently taken home. A BICYCLE MISHAP. Charles Bulger, who is employed at the Terminus Hotel, had a bad fall fropi a bicycle on St. Aubyn road yesterday afternoon. He was badly cut about the and face, and sustained a slight concussion. He was attended to by Dr. Home, and it is not anticipated that his injuries are serious.
