The Burgomaster of Potsdam announced that the refusal by the municipality to grant a sum to entertain British visitors was not due to political motives, and German diplomatists had placed the necessary sum at the disposal of the municipality. On May 26 a Berlin cablegram stated: "The Potsdam municipality lias declined to entertain members of the British Royal Public Health Institute attending the Congress there in July, on the ground of British hostility to Germany. Speakers declared that Britain, having heaped abuse and infamy on Germany last summer, now wanted to press Germany to lier icy bosom."
