THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
"THOU SHALL NOT STEAL." THE CONVENTION VOTE. By Cable—Preee Ase#eiatio»—Copyright. Chicago, June 23. After organising his new party, Mr. Roosevelt formally withdrew from the Convention, and issued a manifesto declaring that the Convention did not represent the Republican voters, but merely a successful fraud, over-riding the rank and file. It was deeply discreditable to any man to accept its nomination. Mt. Roosevelt announced that the new party's motto would be: "Thou shalt not steal." The Convention voted for the candidates as follows:—Taft 561, Roosevelt 107, La Follette 41, Cummin* 17, Hughes 2; 344 did not vote.
THE REPUBLICAN SPLIT. ROOSEVELT'S PROGRAMME. Received 24, 9.50 p.rn. Chicago, June 24. In view of the Republican split, extraordinary interest centres in the Democratic Convention at Baltimore. A similar conflict has broken out between the conservative and progressive wings., Woodrow and Wilson have joined Bryan in opposing Parker's candidature for the chairmanship, believing that if the conservatives dominate the Convention many progressive Democrats will support Roosevelt. Reuter states that Roosevelt's platform will be thoroughly progressive, and include women's suffrage, tariff revision, a national commission to control trusts, and the revision and strengthening of the monetary laws without centralising credit.
