AUSTRALIA v. SURREY. AN UPHILL BATTLE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London. June 18. When the match Australia v. Surrey was resumed the sun was shining, but the attendance was small. The wicket was soft. < Jennings and Bardsley, the not-out men, resumed the play, Rushby and Smith bowling. The batsmen were careful, and 50 appeared in 65 minutes. Jennings got his leg in front at 32, after 80 minutes of stylish play. The rest of the team made a poor stand. Without addition to the score, Bardsley, in playing forward, was bowled by 1 a break-back. He had made nine in 45 I minutes. Six runs later Mayne was [ caught and bowled by Smith from a low j catch. Gregory was run out by a smart I return from Hobbs at silly point. Matthews, without adding to the score, was caught in the slips. Four wickets added 15, and the remaining three added 28. Smith made a big drive and was caught by Abel. Emery and Hazlitt saw the century go up in 130 minutes, and the innings closed after 138 minutes. The bowling was good. Surrey opened, as usual, with Havward and llolib-. llazlitt and Emery bowling. Webster fielded as substitute for Gregory, who had strained a muscle of his leg. The pitch suited the bowlers, the ball turning quickly. At lunch time the score was no wickets for 22—Hayward 16, Hobbs 5. On resuming, with 4000 spectators, Matthews and Kelleway took up the bowling, and Minnett acted as substitute for Gregory. Fifteen had been added when a separation was effected, Hayward being leg-before to Matthews. The wicket improved, and after Hobbs and Hayes were associated there was a fine stand. Fifty went up in 55 minutes, and runs came freely, the century taking 80 minutes. Hayes made a mishit off Hazlitt to mid-oIT, where Macartney bagged it.. The retiring batsman had made 50 in 55 "minutes by hard driving and cutting. The partnership added 82. Ducat and Hobbs made • another good stand, adding 42y Hobbs, when lie had made 76, was taken at cover-point after a fine display of all-round scoring, ineluding two sixes and eight fours. The fourth and fifth wickets fell soon after the third, then another good stand was followed by a total collapse. Abel and Myers added 76 for the sixth wicket, and the raining four a single. At the tea adjournment the score was four for 170—Bird 2, Abel 3. On resuming 6000 spectators were present, Hazlitt and Emery handling the ball. Bird, in Hazlitt's first over, was caught at mid-on behind the bowler.— Five for 170. Myers joined Abel, and runs came quickly. The 200 appeared in 170 minutes. Matthews was slightly indisposed from stomach complaint, not of a serious nature, and Webster acted as . substitute. At 246, when Abel had made 35, he was caught at slip by Hazlitt off Kellewav. He had hit brilliantly on the olf-side, socring seven fours. He gave a i chance at 22 to Carkeek off Emery, and at 30 to Minnett, at long-off, off Macartney. Myers compiled 40 runs in forty miijutes by resolute play. At 34 he was nearly taken on the leg side by Minnett single-handed, off Kelleway. It was a brilliant attempt.—Six for 246. Then a rot came over the batsmen. Carkeek, standing back, caught Hitch off Kelleway, and the next over Myers succumbed to Macartney. Smith' was taken in the slips without scoring, and Rushby's middle stump was uprooted by Kelleway. The innings lasted 215 minutes, the last five wickets falling in 15 minutes.
Australia, requiring 329 to win, opened with Jennings and Mayne to Rushby | and Hitch. The latter was putting on a tremendous pace, and in his second over Jennings was hit hv a rising l hall and I retired with a split finger. Probably he j will bat late in the innings. Mayne, before scoring, gave, a chance at the wickets off Rushby. Mayne and Macartney played out time. The following are the scores:— SURREY. First Innings lflO Second Innings.
