ARBITRATION COURT

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, A deputation from the New Zealand Painters' and Decorators' Federation waited on the Minister for Labor, and suggested some amendments to the Arbitration Act: —(1) That the power of the judge to grant exemptions be repealed, and that any person or corporate body engaged in an industry shall be bound by the full terms of the award; (2) that ip filing an application for the hearing of a dispute, it shall be deemed sufficient notification to the employers in any industry of a citation made by advertisement; (3) that compulsory preference to unionists and that agreements made before the Conciliation Council be .binding. The deputation also asked that a Bill should be passed compelling all partnerships to be registered to prevent the evasion of the Act. The Minister said that the Government proposed to amend the Act this year, and the proposals of the deputation would receive every -consideration. The Act was designed to promote industrial peace and goodwill between the different sections of the community, and it was most essential, if the Act was to be amended in any way, that they should try to make it a really peacemaking business, a real Arbitration Act. with a court on which they could rely to decide any dispute in just and equitable terms.
