THE HOME RULE BILL
AGAR-ROBARTE'S AMENDMENT LOST ) THREAT TO LYNCH THE GOVERNMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 19, 9.40 p.m. » London, June 19. In the House of Commons a heated debate centred round Mr. Agar-Robartes' amendment to exclude Antrim, Armagh, Down and Londonderry from the Home Rule Bill. Mr. Birrell said that it was absurd to suppose that the Government regarded lightly the possibility of civil war, but he did not believe any Ulsterman thought life and liberty to be in danger. Mr. Bonar Law said that the Government dared not employ troops to expel Ulstermen from the Union. The Government, in giving such an order, would risk being lynched in London. The amendment was rejected bv 320 to 251. Mr. D. V. Pirrie (North Aberdeen), Sir E. J. Corrv (Cornwall), Rt. Hon. R. C. Munro-Ferguson (Leith-Burghs), and Mr. W. H. Cown (Aberdeen East), all members of the Liberal Party, voted for the amendment. Thirteen Labor members were absent.
