PERSONAL.

Mr. H. W. Brewer, of Wellington, formerly of the Customs Department, but now on the retired list, is visiting New Plymouth. The death occurred at Masterton on Thursday night of Mr. Leslie McLachlan, a -well-known resident of Masterton, and son of Mr. Duncan McLachlan, settler, of Opalri. The deceased was 29 years of age. "Their ranks grow thin and small" may well be written of the gallant men who fought for British supremacy in New Zealand in '63. One of the remnant of the naval contingent, which took part in that memorable campaign, has just passed away at Sonthend-on-Sea, in the person of Sir William Fletcher TSoughey, sixth baronet of Aqualate. Sir William, who was burn in September, 1840, entered the navy as a boy, and saw active service in New Zealand in 18H3 and in Abyssina in 1807. He retired with the rank of commander. He married, in 1891, Mary, daughter of Mr Richard Pcarco, and in the absence of issue of the marriage, he is succeeded in the baronetcy by bis brother, the Rev. Robert Boughey, vicar of Betley, New-castle-uuder-Lvnne.
