NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB, To-day a pairs' best-ball bogey match will be played. Each player will play on his ordinary bogey handicap, the best ball of each pair at each hole being taken for the purposes of the match. Good entries haye been received for this competition, and given a good day the "Colonel" should be well beaten. An entrance fee of sixpence is payable by each competitor. Matches of this kind are now becoming very popular, and have almost completely 'taken the place of the old foursome. In spite of the very bad weather last Saturday, the majority of the competitors managed to complete their rounds, but not without considerable discomfort. For a time wrecked umbrellas were quite a feature of the landscape. The club Bather severely defeated Stratford on the local links on Thursday, the result being: New Plymouth 10 wins, Stratford 3 wins. However, J. P. Ritchie, who played first for the Stratford team, and who learned his golf on the Braid Hills links in Scotland, was in excellent form, and easily defeated his opponent, A. Bewley. At the first hole, Ritchie pulled his drive into the second gully, and in playing out of the rushes his ball rebounded and unfortunately struck him, causing him to lose the hole. After this he settled down to very steady play, his seores being as follows: First roiuU, 44445534, 33 for 8 holes; second round, 435454436, 38 for 9 holes; total, 71 for 17 holes. ! Work on the new links is now well under way, and Caretaker Bennett hopes soon to have nine or ten holes in readiness for play. Tenders have been accepted for the new building, and it is anticipated that the contractors will soon commence operations. The mixed foursomes match fixed by the Tarahua Club for this afternoon has been postponed till next Saturday.
