The Hawke's Bay meeting opens on Wednesday. Acceptances should make their appearance tliis morning. Mulga Bill lias been turned out until the spring. The Hawke's Bay 'chaser, Corazon, is not expected to stand another preparation. Cheddar is in work again at Hastings in view of his New Zealand Cup engagement. Rangi Thompson, who was connected with Paritutu's success in the Grand National Steeplechase, will pilot the Castor gelding this winter. Makara has been off color lately, and will be spelled for the rest of the season. Albert Jackson has John in work again at Wanganui, but the horse will hardly stand a New Zealand Cup preparation. A southern paper states that Mr. St. J. Buckley, who leaves for England shortly, has disposed of Dearest and most of his racers. It is a long cry to the New Zealand Cup, but already the rooks are offering short odds about the chances of Bronze, Bon Reve, Bandeira, Counterfeit and Domino. Golden Loop, who will carry Mr. A. Douglas' colors at Hastings next week, started 18 times last season for five wins. Gaelic was purchased by the Palmerston owner, Mr. V. O'Neill, after the Auckland meeting, and Outlander was bought by circus-proprietor Barton, to be raced in Australia. The 'chaser Hawick has been sent up to Porirua, and is to be schooled in view of contesting hack steeplechase events at Trentham and Ricearton. ■ A good work is spoken for Coronetted, Who now carries the livery of Mr. J. McKelvie, of Rangitikei. The chestnut is considered to have a chance in the Grand National Hurdle Race. It has been decided to call Undecided's half-sister (by Achilles) "Decided." , Judging by the solid support forthcoming for Continuance and Paisano in the Grand Nationals it is quite likely I that, the former horse will not be taken across to Australia this winter, but will ■ be seen under silk at the Canterbury meeting in August. I Vice-Admiral and Lady Lucy are the only previous New Zealand Cup winners ! engaged in this year's race. ! Julian is reported to be jumping in I great style at Hastings, and another prad : J that shows a liking for the small sticks jis the sturdy-built Faunus. The latter is worth watching. 1 Latest advices from Home show that J D. Maher, with 20 wins, is leading F. ) Wootton amongst the successful jockeys. J Trainer Mason's team was sent across j ! to Sydney yesterday in charge of H. Tel- ■ ford. The team comprised Vice-Admiral, Peirene, Valido, Allegory, Canute, Culcross and another two-year-old. Mr. R. Mason follows on the 20th inst. _ | Another trainer to try his fortune in New South AVales is the well-known Auckland mentor, T. Williarv. He has taken stables at Canterbury Park, and ' already Sir Artegal. Monoplane, Blue Mountain, Rutter. Manurere, Don Quex and a Soult—Lady Regal colt are in active commission. Meremere has broken down, and may, not race again. ! Mr. S. Messena has disposed of Waiouru to Mr. Aubert for lOOgs. Effort is to b>. mated with Invonian this season. Maku is amiss, and will not be able to race before the spring. St. Toney will have plenty of backers at Hastings next week. Sir Tristram enjoys the stable name of '• "Skinny." The veteran shaped well at Otaki, and is still dangerous up to a mile and a quarter. The Epsom Derby winner Tagale started three times as a) two-year-old, winning once. This year s'he ran second to Cylgad in the Newmarket Stakes and won the One Thousand. Tagale and Signorinetta are the only fillies to win the j Derby since Shotover landed the honors !in 1882. Tagale is a grey, and she and Gustavus are the only ones of that color who have won the race. Gustavus won in 1821.
The bay filly Murska (by St. Frusquin— Musa), winner of the Oaks, claims relationship to Danube and other good horses in these parts. St. Frusquin is a full-brother to San Francisco (St. Simon—"lsabel), now located at Stonyhurst. .Wurska's dam is by Martagou, the sire of Martian, who in turn sired Danube, winner of the C.J.O. Derby and other big races.
