AN UNFORTUNATE WORKMAN

A WANGANUI CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The case of Melody v. the Wanganui Meat Freezing Company, claiming £2BOO compensation for injuries, was concluded to-night after a three days' hearing. Melody was a beef butcher in the employ of the company, and in the course of his work a set of bullock chains and a "dropper" fell, the trolley hitting him on the head and totally incapacitating hdm from pursuing his calling. Plaintiff alleged defective apparatus. The jury found a veTdict for defendants, but considered that the accident was due to another employee's negligence. Recognising the extreme hardship, suffering, and financial loss sustained by Melody, the juTy trusted that the company would see its way to recompense him in some adequate way, and provide him with light employment. Counsel for the defendant company said that the company would make a substantial recompense. No costs were asked for.
