FIRE AT FITZORY
OLD LAND MARK DESTROYED. Shortly before eight o'clock last night the Fitzrov Fire Brigade received a call t.i a blaze on the Old Hospital road. On arrival there they found the building, a two-storey houSfe, which was owned by Mr. 11. M. Skeet (Commissioner of Crown Lands at Auckland) and occupied by Mr. Herman Brown and family, enveloped in (lames. Under Captain Griffiths the brigade took a very long lead of hose from near Ramson's down through the paddocks to the burning house. The fire had too strong a hoid, however, with the result that the building—which was quite a land mark—was completely gutted before the flames wer« subdued. It is understood that the building was insured, but for what amount and in what office is not ascertainable. Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who possessed a quantity of valuable furniture, saved nothing beyond a trunk and its contents. It is stated that they were covered to the extent of an insurance of £4OO in the National Office.
