DISTRICT NEWS
(Frtm Our Own Correspondents). WAREA. At a meeting of the bachelors and spinsters of the district on Wednesday night it was decided to hold a ball on the 19th of this month, and a strong committee was set up to carry out arrangements. The latest addition to the local hall !■ a new 90 candle-power patent lamp, which is a great success. The bazaar held in the hall recently in aid of the Anglican Church building fund proved very satisfactory in spite of the wet weather, which lasted all the week. The total proceeds amounted to £6O. The stalls were very prettily decorated and well filled with useful and ornamental articles. The Christmas tree was well stocked with children's toys, etc., and the fish ponds and bran tubs did a good trade amongst the young people, who enjoyed themselves in fishing out all sorts of small toys, dolls' attire, etc. The shooting gallery, managed by Mr. T. Julian and Mr. W. B. Clarke, was kept open every night, and did good business. The committee deserve praise for the way in which they all worked, and special mention should be made of the splendid work of Mrs. Clothier, who carried out the secretarial duties.
TOKO. 'Die local Oddfellows Lodge held a very successful social in the Coronation Haft on Friday evening last, 7th inst. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs Bianchi, of Stratford, and Mr. G. Ruthford very capably filled the bill as M.C. Dancing was kept up until half-past two in. the morning. The milk supply has , decreased so rapidly that it has been found necessary to close the creamery for a few weeks. The creamery is to be thoroughly renovated before opening up for next season. Mr E. T. King, who has been stationed here as Home Missionary for a considerable time, in connection with the Presbyterian Church, has received notice of transfer to Oangarue. I understand Mr Lennox, of Kaponga, is to be his successor. What might have proved a very serious accident occurred at the railway station the other night. As the train was slowing down, a boy, who thought himself clever enough to alight before the train stopped, jumped o(T. Luckily, he managed ' to clear the train. As it was, he measured his length on the platform, receiving a few abi-aMons about the face and hands. Surely his experience will act as a warning in the future. A concert and dance for the purpose of raising funds to effect improvements in our schoolgrounds is to be held on the 28th of this month. The new committee seem to be working hard in the interest of the school and grounds. Several improvements have already been carried out since the present committee took office.
