WIKI KEMP
CLOSE OF THE TANGL By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. It was thought that the funeral of Wiki Kemp would take place next Sunday, but it was decided late this afternoon that the last rites should be performed to-morrow. This decision is the result of the death of a chief tailless itt Hawke's Bay. All the relatives of that lady are in Wanganui, ami they desire to leave as soon as possible for the Hawke's Buy langi. Wiki Kemp will be: buried beside her father, in the Putiki cemetery. The ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church will be performed.
PAKKIIA BOORS. Wanganui, Monday. Over two thousand .Maoris are taking part in the taniri in connection with the death of Wiki Kemp, and more are expected. The pa was thronged with pakeha visitors yesterday, who, however, behaved in a boorish fashion, prying into the tents and rushing the verandah where the renin ins of the dead chieftainess were lying in state. Tn consequence, the Maoris, who exhibited much resentment, have cancelled permission for white visitors to approach the body. Apart from this incident, the nature of the proceedings is still such as to confirm the frequently-expressed opinion that tangis should be put an end to. Of genuine mourning there is very little. No one knows where or when Wiki Kemp will he buried, as a wrangle is going on among sections of her tribe as to where she shall be laid to rest. Some advocate Otaki, and others Wanganui. Politics also bulk largely in the proceedings. '
