IMMIGRATION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, June 10. The State Government has cabled the Agent-General to go slow at present in the matter of immigration. It is stated that farm hands and artisans are readily placed, but too many unskilled men are coming. The dryness has affected the demand for men in the country. Also incidentally shippers desire to raise assisted fares from £l2 to £l4. A FATAL RIOT. Sydney, June 10. Henry Morris, aged 19, who had his skull fractured in the Haymarket riot, is dead. A HISTORICAL PROSPECTOR. Hobart, June 10. Mr. W. McDonough, the actual discoverer of the Mount Lyell mine, is dead. He was in receipt of a pension from tile Government and the company conjointly. AN EMPIRE EXHIBITION. Melbourne, June 10. South Australia, Westralia, Tasmania, and Queensland have intimated that they are not prepared to co-operate in an Empire Exhibition. SMALL ARMS. Sydney, June 10. The Lithgow small arms factorv guaranteed to produce fiftv rifles daifv of the present War Office pattern, with interchangeability of parts. The representative of the contractors for the machinery, speaking at the ceremony, said that at Lithgow a rifle would be turned by the work of one man for 23 hours whereas it took 48 hours at Birmingham! and 72 hours at Enfield, to do the same work with less efficient machinery.
