The main reason for lack of initiative in English jockeys is due to the insecurity of tenure. Owners are now constantly putting Frenchmen and Americans up. and the Englishman rides every race in fear of being superseded. Lord Lonsdale says that the fault lies not in want of nerve, but in the adoption of the unnatural American seat.
