CHINA'S PLEA FOR A PLACE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received ]O, 9.30 p.m. Melbourne, June 10. The Chinese Consul-General, in an address at the Wesley Church, describing the national developments of China, said that she would take her place in the world's affairs. She wanted to be treated as a free people. China was forced to open her gates to other nations, and protested against the exclusion of 'Chinese. This was going to be a question, and Australia would do well to consider it.
AX AUCKLAND PROTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. United action is being taken in Auckland by the employers and their workmen to prevent the introduction of Chinese labor into the furniture trade. A public meeting was held to-night under the joint auspices of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Federated furniture Workers' Association and the furniture manufacturers, when two resolutions were unanimously passed, one expressing apprehension of the proposal to introduce Chinese labor into the trade in the Dominion, and petitioning Parliament to pass legislation to prevent injury to any industry by the introduction of Asiatic labor, and the other asking the Government to place a prohibitive tariff on wicker and rattan furniture made bv Asiatic labor.
