ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. CarteTton, Yesterday. A chapter of accidents occurred last night, when people were returning from the Greytown trots. A gig, owned by Mr. Hercock, of Kohotatu, overturned, and the occupants were precipitated heavily on the road. No one was hurt. Next a three-horse drag -was crossing the Black Bridge, when the horses shied and jambed the wheels to the side of the bridge. The driver, Tom Shaw, controlled the horses and proceeded to descend from his seat, when he slipped and fell through the side of the bridge to the river-bed, a drop of nearly twenty feet. In the excitement and bustle of the passengers moving the coach, Shaw was not missed for half an hour, and when found was suffering severely from shock and bruises, but no bones were broken. He waß removed to his home in a motor-car. Both poles of the drag were broken, and it was left on the roadside. The third accident occurred to B. Wadham's motor car, which, while returning from Clareville, ran into two trotting horses, his own Todd Bells and W. Redmond's Sonny. The former was in a sulky, and the other was being led behind. Wadham could not see them till upon them, and crashed right into the sulky,' missing the front horse. The led horse was scared, and dashed across the road, meeting the car and sustaining very severe wounds in tlie chest ami front legs, one wound necessitating twenty stitches. The sulky and car were disabled. Wadham was severely bruised in the chest, and sustained two broken ribs. He was taken to his home, and is progressing .satisfactorily.
FATAL FALL FROM A HORSE. Gore, Yesterday. Ashephfn' nam I'd John Rae was found dead nt W.iil-'iW vesterday. He was engaged in driving sheep at the time of his death. His body was found on the road, the man having evidently fallen off his horse.
ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. Gisborne, Last Night. The unknown man found drowned in the Te Arai river on Saturday has been identified as Patrick McConnell, about 28 years of age, who had been working on various stations in the district for some time. At the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. ,
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Palmerston North, Last Night. While suffering from a fit of depression, Wm. John Duggett, an old-age-pensioner, attempted to commit suicide this morning at Oakautere, by cutting his throat with a butcher's knife. He is now an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital.
