SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Mr. J. Buckley has tired of Stepney, and the colt has been disposed of to a Wellington sport. Our own Clarence O'Neill has blossomed forth as "private trainer"—no less—to a Tasmanian turf-ite, Mr. T. Gatenby. Multiform, who gave up living recently, was the champion of his years on the New Zealand turf, and the old horse's record is still fresh in the minds of pre-sent-day race followers. By Hotchkiss— Formo, the horse first saw the light at Wellington Park, Tom Morrin's cradle 01 champions, and was snapped up as a bargain at 230gns, by the late G . G. Stead. As a two-year-old Multiform won eight times in eleven starts, and at three and four years was never beaten, gathering in the tidy total of £7390 in stakes. His dividends were mostly of £1 2s 6d s'tyle, and it was a shame what he did to his opponents. Sent early to the stud, he immediately achieved success, his progeny including Noctuifom, Boniform, Mulitifid, Sungod, Isolt, Nautiform, the sensational Golden Slipper, and other high-class horses. Bought 'by the N.S.W. sportsman, Mr. J. McDonald, for 3750gns. at the Stead dispersal sales, Multiform was transferred to Australia, but the climate over ithere was not to hi» liking, and his progeny over there werft only moderates.
How the mighty have fallen! Old Lupulite, who once made light of welter weights, now struggles unsuccessfully, with 7st or thereabouts.
