The Lord Mayor presided at a meeting of citizens to protest against the Federal Government House being used otherwise than as the official residence of the Governor-General. A deputation was appointed to interview the Government. The Lord Mayor announced that Lord Denman had suggested a compromise on the Government scheme, to the effect that the whole grounds should he open to the public all the year and the House and gardens when the Governor-General was not in residence. THE MOUNT LYELL COMPANY. Melbourne, June 1. The report presented at the halfI yearly meeting of the Mount Lyell Company foreshadowed a saving of £40,000 yearly by the adoption of the waterpower scheme in the place of steam. There would also be a substantial saving in the smelting and converting I operations. The board had purchased the undertaking at a cost of £IB,OOO. POLITICAL ETIQUETTE. Sydney, June 1. [ Mr. Willis'' latest departure is a notification to members of the Assembly that he will not officially present them at Lord Denman's levee on Monday. Lord Denman's chamberlain explains that Mr. Willis suggested that members should have cards of private entree. This was against the rules established some time ago, and Lord Denman declined the request. A SAFE ROBBED. Adelaide, June 1.
