SPORTS PROTECTION
A LIVELY MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. A meeting convened by the Sports Protection Association was attended !by about 500 people. They carried resolutions to request an amendment to the law so that totalisator fractions, instead of going to racing clubs, should be devoted to benevolent institutions; also, that bookmakers be re-established (carried unanimously, amidst applause); that races under six furlongs be abolished; and supporting the Post and Telegraph employees in their protest against Mr, Ell's anti-gambling circular. During the meeting there was a lively interchange between the Rev. Mr. Ready and Mr. Hackett, Chairman. Mr. Ready wished to speak on the resolution re bookmakers. The chairman pointed out that the meeting was called for sportsmen only. Mr. Ready protested that it was a public meeting, and that be took a great interest in legitimate sport. Mr. Major, ex-M.P., advocated that Mr. Ready be heard, but the chairman declined to give way.
