FIRE AT FOXTON
WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION. £IO,OOO DAMAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. A disastrous blaze occurred at Foxton on Sunday morning. Twelve shops, the Methodist Church, a billiard saloon, and a private residence were completely demolished. The places destroyed were the Methodist Church, a billiard saloon, a private residence, and the shops of Newth (confectioner), Osborne (tailor), Bradley (tailor), Henderson and Cunningham (confectioners), Bullard (saddler), Betty (bootmaker), Woodroope (butcher), Nye (stationer), Tallon, Son, and Boyes (dentists), Healey (chemist), a motor garage, and Snow (bootmaker). The fire was discovered about one o'clock, when the flames had a good hold. The buildings were close together. There was no brigade or water service. Whyte's Hotel, on the opposite side of the road, had a narrow escape. are no details of an authentic nature, but a rough calculation estimates the loss at fully £10;000.
