THE BRITISH NAVY
DEFENCE OF THE PACIFIC. By Cable—Presa Association—Copyright. Melbourne, June 1. Mr. Pearce, referring to the shortsighted view of English journals on Australia's naval position, said that, even taking the anti-German view of these papers, it must be remembered that Germany had a strong fleet in the Pacific. Reliance could not be placed on the Japanese as counteracting this fleet, because the Japanese alliance is conditional, having for its object the mutual protection of interests in the East, and it would not necessarily apply to the Pacific.
