STRIKERS' ARRESTED.
THE PORT OP LONDON AUTHORITY.
Received 30, 1.10 a.m. London, May 29. The police convoyed further large quantities of meat and grain from the docks, amidis't the strikers' half-hearted opposition. A dozen arrests were made at Canmington for bottle-throwing and attempts to overturn a van and cut the traces.
The Port of London Authority has issued a statement that it cannot discriminate between union and non-union carmen and lightermen. If the situation is prolonged beyond Friday it must temporarily discharge a portion of its staff. The Strikers' Committee have accepted Mr. Buxton's invitation, reserving the right to withdraw unless they meet thoroughly representative employers, including the Port of London Authority. The Carmen's Trade Union endorsed the transporters' decision to attend the conference and send representatives. It exhorts the men to stand firm.
The Independent Labor Party's conference, by 105 to 73, rejected lue proposal that the party should vote on the merits of every question, even if it involved a Government defeat. It stated that the party was unable to stand the financial strain of continual general elections.
THE TYRANNY OF LABOR. Sydney, May 29. Mr. Bell, managing director of the North Coast Steamship Company, in a speech, said that the labor tyranny must end. The laborer was worthy of his hire, but when tyranny and oppression became uppermost, something must give way. He characterised the recent arbitration awards as regards masters and officers as a disgrace to a civilised race.
