NAPIER-WELLINGTON EXPRESS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Wednesday. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday to protest against the movement to divert the Napier-Wellington express from the Manawatu route back to the Wairarapa, In the course of the discussion it was pointed out'that while Napier people had been agitating for the speeding up of trains, with a view to cutting down the time occupied on the journey between Napier and Wellington, the proposed diversion would mean extending the time from i) hours 32 minutes to 10 hours 50 minutes. A deputation I was appointed to interview Mr. Myers I to-morrow and emphatically protest against the proposal. [ A SHIPPING CALAMITY. Auckland, Wednesday. The Norwegian barque Whinlatta, from New Caledonia, bound for Glasgow with ore, put into Ahipara short of provisions. Half the crew deserted, and it is reported that the rest of the crew will not obey orders. There is a danger of the vessel being driven ashore if the wind changes, The captain is liable to a fine of £ 100' a head for the men who are left ashore without their having passed the education test. The Norwegian consul is endeavoring to send a crew from Auekland.
AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATIONS. Wellington, Wednesday. The conference of delegates of automobile associations this morning decided that it was desirable to form a union j of all automobile associations in the Dominion, and a committee was set up', to draft rules for submission to the!; various associations. The object is to I secure legislation providing, amongst! other things, for the enforcement of j careful and considerate driving on the 1 part of all motorists and the due ob-] servance of the rules of the read by j everybody; that no person be allowed! to drive without a license; and that! steps be taken to make it compulsory j for all vehicles to light up at dark. | FALSE PRETENCES. j Wanganui, Wednesday, j In the Police Court this morning, | Albert Larsen was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge of' false pretences. Larsen had taken round a subscription list, alleged to be j in aid of the sufferers of the Titanic disaster, representing himself as a constable.
HEALTH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN. Christchurch, Wednesday.
The Hon. W. G. Russell, who attended the meeting of the Hospital Board this morning, said that the Government would shortly appoint two medical inspectors, one man and one woman, to examine school children throughout New Zealand. The appointments would probably be made duringthe next few weeks... It was hoped particularly that they would be able to detect the first attacks of consumption and make a real onslaught on the scourge. In this connection the Health Department was collecting the fullest information and would issue quarterly bulletins. . ...•-.
PALMERSTON STATION. PaLmerston N„ Wednesday.
A deputation from various bodies in Palmerston waited on the Minister of Railways in reference to improvements at the local railway station. The Minister went fully into the matter and eventually stated that the improvements would include' an island platform 900 ft. Ion?, and the enlargement of the (roods sheils. The question of speeding up the trains was also fully discussed.
