GOLF.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. To-diiy', the ifiaal round of the 'Xgamotu trophy will be played off by the eight who qualified on the hist two Saturdays. The draw is as follows: Johns and A. Burgess, Mackay and Seott, Hutchen and Glasgow, Bain and C. J. Burgess. Concurrently with this match, the second match for the St. Andrew's Cross will be played by those with handicaps of 12 and ilmler and for those with handicaps with 13 and over a medal match has been arranged. For each of these games, an entrance fee of sixpence will be charged. On last Saturday's scores, the following reductions to handicaps will be made :—Bain from 20 to IS", S. Burgess 20 to 19. "Players must replace turf and walk quickly between strokes." Notices to this effect are found on many links and similar notices might well he placed at different points on the local course. Judging by the appearance of the turf in various places, the rule with regard to replacing breaks seems to be more honored in the breach, than in its observance. Now that the links arc so crowded on Saturdays, it is almost impossible for those who start last to finish tlieir round before dark, but it would help matters considerably if all the players would walk briskly from one shot to the next, instead of simply sauntering along as some now do. On June 3 (King's Birthday) the Hawera Club is sending a team of some twelve or thirteen men to play a match against the New Plymouth Club. The visitors will probably arrive in, New Plymouth on Saturday night, and leave on the following Tuesday morning. Last Thursday was not an ideal day for golf, as the high cold wind tended to' make the play somewhat erratic, and consequently the exhibition of golf given in the match between MeCormick and A. Bewley and W. C. Weston was not of so high a standard as would probably have been seen had the day been a calm one. The first hole was won by MeCormick in an excellent 3, the next was halved in 4, the* third and fourth in 5, tlie fifth was won by MeCormick in 5. At the Pines, MeCormick secured a hnlf in 4by holing a short approach. The seventh, eighth and ninth were halved in 5, 3, and 5. MeCormick was thus 2 up and had completed the round in 30—a good score at any time. The first hole on the second round went to the local players through MeCormick losing his tall in the road fence. The second hole was halved in 3 and the third was won by MeCormick. The fourth was halved in 4, and the fifth was lost by MeCormick, who missed" a short putt, for a half. The Pines was again halved. The Rocks and the Coffin were won by tlie local men in 5 and 3, MeCormick now being 1 down for the first time. The last hole proved a most exciting one, MeCormick and Bewley both getting in good drives. Weston, however, sliced hiß ' and got into trouble and had to pick up. Each of the others was on in 3 —MeCormick about five feet from the pin, and Bewley about five or six yards away. Both, however, holed their putts and thus the match ended with MeCormick 1 down. A fair number of spectators followed the match, and had the day been warmer probably many others would have been present. TARAHUA CLUB. A men's medal match (St. Ceorge's 'Cross) is set down for decision to-day. ['There will be no ladies r matches throughout next week. The greens are in splendid onder, although nothing much has been done in the way of high I scores the last few days. The younger players are beginning to strike form, i and members are looking forward to i some interesting matches with their conI temporaries at the New Plymouth Club's links sometime this season.
