Considering the heavy rain which fell in the morning, the course -was in good order for to-day's racing. Proceedings opened with the Borough Handicap, for which Thrave and Ineuru were most fancied. Simple Sam made tlie running to the straight, where Allurement came through and won comfortably. Thrave was fourth. Ineuru was never prominent. Hautere was an odds-on favorite for the Hack Steeplechase. After Makiri and Drudgery had made the running for a mile and a half, the favorite went to the front, but fell, leaving Drudgery with a big lead, which he maintained to the end. Backers rushed Continuance, Whakaweira and Antarctic in the Wanganui Steeplechase, Sir Lethe made the running for two miles and a half. Continuance then led to the last hurdle, where Okaihau drew level and won a great race by nearly two lengths. Glenmore finished fast, a length behind Continuance. Dorando was fourth, Antarctic fifth, and Sir Lethe sixth. Pleiades fell in the first mile and shattered his leg, and was destroyed. Whakawcira fell six furlongs from home. Sphinx and Kauroa carried most money in the Hack Hurdle Handicap. Te Roti made all the running, Silver Cluse just beating the New Plymouth horse by a bare length. Bismarck finished fast, third. Kauroa was fourth, and Torbelle fifth. Koran was best backed in the Century Hack Handicap, hut was never sighted. The Native set a merry pace for two miles, with Sandy Paul and Merry Lad next. Darby Paul and Stevens dame through at the bend, the former winning very easily. Merrivonia was a very hot favorite for the Connolly Handicap, and after Golden Loop had led to the turn Deely brought the favorite through, winning
comfortably from the fast-finishing Mes- j cal. } Punters made Lcoanta and Draft iav-; orites in the Purua Handicap. Simple I Bam led to tli..■ turn, hut Tiwarai won ' easily from another outsider in Waikahua. Winners were hard to pick during the day, Taranaki horses had a good day, Drudgery, Te Roti and Darby Paul all paying good prices.
