SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. The annual conference of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Assistants' Association was opened to-day. Mr. It. Laing, of the Christchurch Boys' High School, presided. The report stated that the membership totalled 118, and included teachers of nearly all the larger secondary schools. With the advent of the new Ministry it seemed desirable that the claims of teachers to have benefits under the Superannuation Act, computed on the highest average salary for any three consecutive years, should be pushed forward as vigorously as possible. The chairman read a paper on ethical training, in the course of which he urged the necessity of providing a proper school environment and suggested the possibility of imparting a measure of self-government in some of our schools. On his motion the following resolution was passed t "That in the opinion of this association it is advisable that di r - ' ethical training be in second: l . chools."
