The attendance was iSOOO. Carkeek, Mc- i Laren, Smith and Jennings were omitted from the Australian team and Philip Mead replaced Relf in the M.C.C. team. M.C.C. won the toss and went to the wickets. The bowling was entrusted to Emery and Minnett. The batsmen opened flukily, Fry making two dangerous strokes in the first over, and Douglas being nearly caught twice from rising balls. Fry succumbed to a low ball which rose fast off the pitch, and Douglas was taken at second slip. The ball was kicking occasionally. Seventy appeared for an hour's play, and the century in 100 minutes. Warner was smartly taken by Minnett at third man ] from a rising ball which glanced off the | shoulder of his hat. Hazlitt replaced j Emery after luncheon. Hearne failed to stop one of Kelleway's and Spooner's > middle stump was removed by the same bowler.
