HOUSEWIVES' UNION
REDUCING THE COST OP LIVING. Christeliurcl), Sunday. At a meeting of the Housewives' Union Mrs. Leo Cowlc, the national organising secretary, addressed the meeting on practical methods of reducing the cost of living. She outlined the good lead of the Invercargill Union, whose officers had interviewed various tradespeople of their city, with the result that bona fide members of the union wore now provided at cheaper rates with coal, meat, milk, butter and potatoes. Coal had been reduced for them by (is Od per ton, meat by Id per lb, and milk by Id per quart. Potatoes in retail quantities were supplied at wholesale prices, and it was hoped that other commodities would shortly be reduced in price, as much active interest was being taken in the work. The president was appointed to interview tradespeople with a view of finding what reductions in the cost of commodities would be possible to the union on a municipal basis of membership.
