THE NITRE SUPPLY
TAXIXG THE AIR. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 19, 5.20 p.m. London, May 18. Sir William Ramsay, K.C.8., F.R.S., Professor of Chemistry at the University College, London, speaking at the British Science Guild, urged, in the interest of , national defence, the manufacturing of nitre from the atmosphere, instead of relying on Chilian and Peruvian supplies, which an enemy would probably capture.
Professor Ramsay has distinguished himself by researches into the constituents of the air. In conjunction with Lord Rayleigh he discovered argon. Besides discovering helium he has also detected in the air the unknown elements to which he has given the Greek names neon, krypton and xenon. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1904, and was made President of the British Association in 1911, on which occasion, during his presidential address, he gave warning as to the limit of coal supplies.
