It is generally understood that in the event of Mr. Win. Jennings not contesting Taumarunui at the next general election, Mr. A. Scholes (chairman of the Waitemata County Council) will be a candidate in the Government interest.
The Hon. J. A. Millar (states an Auckland Press Association telegram) has been suffering from ptomaine poisoning for the last few days, and has been forced to delay his departure to Gisborne. In all probability, Mr. Millar will leave Auckland on Friday.
Dr. Bernard Myers, a brother of the Hon. Arthur Myers, has just received from Mr. T. W. Wallington, private secretary to the Queen, a letter conveying Her Majesty's thanks for a copy of Mr. Myers' recently-published book. "The Letters of a Professional Man." Mr. Wallington says: "I am to inform you that the Queen is much pleased in possessing such ian interesting hook."
The death is announced of Mr. G. A. L. Pauling, district land registrar at Invercargill, who has been in a precarious state of health for some time past. The cause of death is said to have been heart failure, accentuated by an attack of pneumonia. Deceased entered the Government service at Wellington thirty years ago,' when he was appointed to the Lands and Deeds Office. He remained in the Wellington office for fourteen years, during which time he was once a representative Rugby footballer. Later he went to Napier, and was transferred to Tnvercargill about twelve months ago. He was forty-seven years of age at the time of death, and leaves a widow, but no family.
