Seymour was out to a low double-handed 1 catch in the slips by Jennings. The bowling, which was steady, was carefully; watched. The partnership between I Smith and ITiiy wood only added 12, when : Smith, playing late at Minnett, was j bowled. With Thompson in the half con- ' tury was hoisted after 55 minutes' play, but at 63 Haywood hit over a yorker and was bowled. He gave a chance in the same oyer to Carlceekj, standing back. J. Denton assisted Thompson, and after the partnership had put on 30 runs, he was easily caught by Carkeek, standing back to Kelleway. The batsmen were very watchful, and W. Denton and Thompson were not separated before the luncheon adjournment, the score being then 106 for five wickets. The century had taken 110 minutes to compile. The cricket was uneventful and the bowling steady. After lunch the attendance rose to 1500. Kelleway and Emery opened the bowling, and, after two runs had been added, W. Denton, playing forward to Emery, was easily caught at short leg. Thompson, who had scored 29, showed enterprising batting. Woolley and Thompson raised the total to 145, when Woolley played too late to Emery, and was bowled. Four runs later East was out to a brilliant low double-handed catch at short leg. With only three ; runs addd, Wells was bowled off his; pads. The last wicket added 17. Thompson showed sound defence, but hit out towards the close. His chancelcss innings lasted 145 minutes and included four fours. Northamptonshire's innings lasted 185 minutes. The Australians" ground fielding was moderate. Wanting 202 runs to avert an innings' defeat, Northamptonshire followed on. but made, a poor start, two wickets falling for 8 runs. Carkeek, standing back to Minnett, took a low catch from Seymour and Vials played Emery on. Five runs later, Haywood was caught at the wickets, and at 25 Carkek caught W. Denton. Thompson and Smith made a useful stand, and 50 went up after an hour and a quarter's play. At 90 Thompson put his leg in front to a full pitcher. He had given a chance at 20 to Matthews, off the latter's own bowling. His driving and leg hitting were good. At 102, Smith was caught at midoff, after batting for 70 minutes. The seventh wicket fell at 10D, Jennings in the slips catching Woolley at the second attempt. One run later, East put his leg in front to a full pitcher from Emery.
