LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL
ANOTHER CONDEMNATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wairoa, Saturday. A largely attended meeting of the local bodies of the Wairoa district last night strongly condemned the Local Government Bill as regards county councils. At the meeting of the Botough Council and Hospital Board resolutions were also passed condemning it for its centralising tendencies. It is claimed that Wairoa, in its isolation, demands special consideration. The Mayor of Wairoa was elected a delegate, and the following motion proposed (but not put, the delegate elect stating that he would adopt the line proposed): That the Government be recommended, if it desires to simplify local government, to adopt charitable aid districts as granted, and abolish all road boards, charitable aid and hospital boards, domain and cemetery boards, town, drainage and river boards, and delegate their powers and duties to the councils and boroughs. FURTHER PROTESTS. Hawera, Last Night. At a meeting of representatives of local bodies within the Hawera-Patea hospital districts to-day Mr. J. T. Quini, chairman of the Eltham County Council, was elected delegate to represent the district at the conference in Wellington in connection with the Local Government Bill. A resolution was carried: That the local bodies of the Hawera-Patea districts strongly oppose the proposed Bill, as it appears before delegates. The meeting also resolved that it is in favor of the introduction of a well-considered Local Government Bill, somewhat on the lines recommended to the Government by the Municipal Counties Conference, and with a well-organised constitution.
