SLY GROG

POLICE METHODS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tueßday. The methods of the police in an alleged sly grog selling case were criticised by counsel in the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Chapman said, in his address to the jury, that it was suggested that the constable went to the premises not to detect crime, hut to create it. However, it was a perfectly legitimate thing for the police to send one of their number to see if suspected persons were willing to commit this particular offence. Indeed, it was the duty of the police. It was not correct to call it creating crime, and, so long as a perfectly respectable agent was employed, as for example a member of the force of known respectability, it was no danger to the community.
