DISTRICT NEWS

"*■■;. . WAITARA ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The fortnightly euchre party and dance was held in the Huirangi hall last Wednesday evening. Although the weather was not of the best, a good number attended, and a pleasant evening was spent. The ladies' prize was won by Miss 0. Totara, and the gentlemen's by Mr, Len Sarten. After supper dancing was kept up till 1 a.m. On Tuesday last a number of parents, together with the school children, assembled at the Huirangi hall to bid goodbye to Mr. A. Bullians, who is leaving to take charge of the Waihi school. The school children presented Mr. Bullians with a set of gold studs and sleeve links, the presentation being made by Master Allen Old in a few appropriate remarks, finishing with three cheers for Mr. Bullians. Afternoon tea, provided by the ladies, brought a pleasant hour to a close.

The changeable weather of late has had the effect of reducing the milk supply at the factory, which is now running on alternate days. My last note re the Waitara road railway loading space seems ; to have stirred up the authorities, as I notice necessary improvements are already well in hand. I might draw the department's attention to another small matter while the men are on the job. Bags or sacks of wheat, potatoes, and other bulky goods are often dumped out into the station, the road .to which is on the opposite side of the rails mid station. Now, I understand it is against the. regulations to back one's cart over the rails to load these goods, but I would like to ask the department how one is to load them otherwise? If the railway people dump such goods on the station platform, I think it is only reasonable that the department should put a level crossing between the rails so that people can back up to receive their goods. The permanent way inspector must know that at certain stations the public must be provided with this crossing, to prevent their breaking a by-law, and I hope in this case the necessary improvement will be made while the men are on the spot.
