ATHLETICS.

i NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Council of the New Zealand Athletic Association met to-night. A letter from the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling 'Union stated that one of their executive, who happened to be in Westport, wrote: "The action of the Westport Football Club in holding sports (avowedly amateur), practically two meetings, at Cape Foulwind and Granity Creek, is a crying shame. It would be a good idea to enquire into the bona fides of the alleged amateur sports meetings held at Westport on Saturday and Monday of Easter time. I know certain cash men competed, and surely this fact alone would show the Amateur Athletic Association that they were just being used to raise money for people who care nothing at all about sport." The union stated that this came from a reliable source. It was decided to ask the Canterbury Centre whether any permit was issued for the meeting, the local centre knowing nothing about it. iWth regard to the record claimed to have been put up by G. McHold, in throwing the 161b hammer at Christchurch, on February 24, the chairman reported that he had ascertained that there was only one competitor in the event, and he ruled that it could not be held as a record. It was explained that had there been only one other entrant the* application would have been in order, It was resolved to upKohl the ruling of the chairman in the nutter. ■ < The application by A. X. Clark for reinstatement was referral to the 'New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association. Two other applications for reinstatement, those of A. M. Stemerge and R. Sprague, were referred to the Auckland Association for information as to whether either of these athletes had received payment for playing football under Northern Union rules. MERE MERE SPORTS.
