The grounds were in good order, and the standard of play was above the • average for an opening day. The Pirates—Kaierau contest was fast and open, the former scoring nicely by 15 to 3. Tilyard, for Wanganui, and Coutts, for Pirates, were easily the best players sporting jerseys. The Northern Union game threatens to do big things in Wanganui this season. The League lias secured the most cen--5 tral ground, Cook's Gardens, for a term t of four months, and will endeavor to inaugurate both Thursday and Saturday competitions. An erstwhile New Plymouth boy, "Jack" Grady, arrived in town yesterday on a visit to his people.
