Mr. John R. Russell, of the Danriovirke Advocate proprietary, and Mrs. Russell, leave on a trip to England on -May 17. They will travel to Sydney by the Maunganui, and to London by the Omrah.

Tiie death was announced a few days ago of an old Canterbury resident, Mr. W. Harrison, the well-known miller of Winchester. For many years he was foreman in charge for the late Mr. Inwood, but on the death of the, latter he became owner of the mill, lie was a man of the greatest probity, and was highly respected and esteemed in the district.

.Tu.it prior to hi* departure by the Remuera on Friday for Buenos Aires Captain R. Amundsen, the hero of the Norwegian expedition to the South Pole, was presented by Mr. Henry M. Stowell (Hare Hongi) with a stone axe, in memory of the Maori vikings of the far south. In an accompanying letter Mr. Stowell wrote:—'"Tt. is rather a good example of the class of stone axe with which the Maori navigators of New Zealand hewed out their fine war and voyaging canoes. It was used as the European uses ail adze, the handle being bound on wit.li sinnet, I intend to watch your voyage as well as I can, and hope you get there." Captain Amundsen gratefully accepted the typical gift.
