HUNTING

NORTH TARANAKI HUNT CLUB. MEET AT NGAERE. (By Telegraph—Special to tlte "News.") Stratford, Last Night. Stratford was enlivened yesterday morning by the arrival of a strong contingent of members of the North Taranaki Hunt Club, headed by Mr. A. H. Halcombe (the master), Mr. B. H. Chancy (deputy master.) and Mr. Arthur Cliff (huntsman). They made an imposing cavalcade as, preceded by the fine pack of hounds, they traversed Broadway before heading for Mr. Sparkes' property at Ngaere, for the opening hunt in this district. The afternoon was fine and some good sport was secured. The country was not as open ae could be desired, but not so broken as to rob the afternoon's sport of its enjoyment. Amongst those present were: Messrs. A. H. Halcombe on Tangamoana, Cliff on Kiri and Kura; H. Matthews on Rua and 1 Star Rose, Chaney on Drudgery, N. Bewley, J. Smith 'on Bluey, R. George on Harkaway, L. George on Red Hazard, W. Cole on Darkey, J. Cole on Uruti, G. Foreman on Barney, L. Jennins on Laddie, Miss Street on Brownie, Mrs. Matthews on Malapin, Mr. G. Skelton on Paton, Messrs. A. J. Davey, H. Masters, P. Burgess, J. Brannigan, E. Jackson, F. Gooch, Diamond, Sparkes, Beedie and others. There were a few spills, but on the whole the fencing was good. Mr. Sparkes provided afternoon tea. Three runs resulted in three kills, the hounds following the first hare about two miles, about five miles in the second run (which was the best run of the day), and about | four miles in the third, during the course of which the hounds followed their quarry on to prohibited territory. About a hundred people were spectators from the road.
