DISTRICT NEWS

TARURUTANGI ('From Our Own Correspondents), The annual smoke concert was held in the public hall on Thursday evening, when a large number of settlers turned up to spend a social evening, and to indulge in the fragrant weed. The function turned out a great success, thanks to our energetic secretary, who always carries through with a snap everything that he takes in hand. After waiting for many months we are at last to have the telephone extended to our school, which will be a great convenience to settlers. : The hum of the thresher is to be heard in tlie district, and good yields are reported. Grass and winter feed is abundant, and, altogether, the district is in a, very flourishing condition at present. Quite a number of would-be buyers have been in the district lately, but owners of land are sitting tight. Evidently they know when they have "a good thing on."

The hammer and saw have also been very busy lately. Three new residences have been erected on the Glenfern estate, owned by Mr. H. Pitt. Mr. George Longstaff has also made a very handsome .addition to his residence. Large additions, too, are being carried out for Mr. A. Street. Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Baldock, and a large supper room has been built at the public hall. Tarurutangi, being right in the centre of the great oilfields of Taranald, great things are expected as soon as boring operations are started 'here. A farmer here a few days ago was ploughing a low portion of his farm when the plough opened up an oil spring, and petroleum flowed along the furrow, showing that the oil must be very near the surface. No doubt Tarurutangi will supply the gushers when the field is properly opened up. Truty, this is a land flowing with milk and honey, or corn, wine—and oil! A gigantic seed pod can be seen growing on'a plant of the musa ensete in the garden of Mr. Trios. Rowe. The seed, pod is nine feet long and 45 inches in circumference. It is estimated to weigh 4c\vt. and to contain three bushels of seed.

KOEITO. The annual school picnic and sports were held here on Thursday, April 4. The day was fine and the- attendance large. The committee worked hard to provide fun for the children, who seemed to 'have the time of their lives. There were also sawing, nail driving, stepping the chain and running for adults. The runing events were keenly contested, the presence of several 'outside runners making them very interesting. A euchre party and dance was held in the evening and was well attended. The householders' meeting, held on April 22, was well attended. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £ll 10s. Nine were nominated for the committee, the election resulting as> follows:—Mrs. Ansford, Mrs. Williams, Messrs H. Allen, M. Williams, C. Weston, T. Molloy and J. Houlahan.

The Korito school was awarded the Tisch Shield for the hest kept grounds for the year ending December 31, 1911, but up to the present that shield has not made its appearance. Korito and the committee are wondering where it can be. The many friends of Mr Robert Bielby, of Albert road, will be sorry to hear of his death, which sad event took place on Friday last. "Bob" was well known here and highly respected. He was a man of sterling qualities, whose motto through life seemed to be "Do a good turn when you can." His widow and family will nave the sympathy of their many friends at Korito. Tlie weather is very cold, and milk is -very scarce.
