Miaa M. Hutchens has been appointed clerk of the Woodville County Council. There were six applicants. The Governor will leave Auckland tonight for Hawke's Bay, returning to Auckland in ten days' time. Mr. F. Townsend, of Wellington, was in New Plymouth yesterday. He motored up from Wellington, doing the distance in ten hours, or two hours wider train time. Sympathetic (reference was made by the Master (Mr. A. H. Halcombe) at the opening meet of the North Taranaki Hunt Club on Saturday, to the death of Mrs. A. Cliff, wife of tlhe huntsman. Lieutenant E. G. R. G. Evans, R.N.. of the British Antarctic expedition, accompanied by Mrs. Evans, will leave next week for Sydney to join the Orontes for England. Mr. Francis Drake, secretary to the expedition, will leave by the same steamer, and return in time to go south. Major Carinichael, the Salvation Army Provincial Commissioner, has received a eable from Melbourne stating that Commissioner Richards, the new territorial commissioner for New Zealand, will arrive in Wellington on June 19. His reception will take place on June 80, in Wellington. > Mr. Win. Brewer, of Waverley, died a* Wanganni on Sunday morning. The deceased, who was born at Birmingham in IS4S, arrived in the colony with J»»8 father when ten years of age (says tht i Patea Press). After spending some time on the staff of the Government Survey, Mr. Brewer came to Waitotara, where he took up land. In 1870 he married a daughter of the late Major Durie, of Wanganui, who survives him. The deceased was a splendid type of settler, fulfilling his obligations to his King and country in a way that gained for him the respect and admiration of all. As a member of the Wanganui Cavalry he saw active service during the Maori War, and in later time served on almost every local body in tho district. The deceased was a keen sportsman, taking a prominent part in the EgmontWanganui Hunt as well as in the Egmont and Waverley racing clubs. Besides his widow, deceased leaves a family of three sons and three daughters—Mrs. Hawera, Mr. H. Brewer, Waitotara, Mrs, Alf. Symes, Waverley, Mrs. (Dr.) Simmons, Patea, and Miss Maud Brewer, of "Waihou," Widespread.
