FIRE AT HAWERA.
A DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATION. £15,000 DAMAGE.' By Telegraph— Press Association. _ Hawera, Last Night.' A destructive fire occurred, at five o'clock this morning,, resulting in the Central Hotel (Barclay Harrington, licensee, and D. Barry, owner) and McOrruer, Bone aind Co.'s drapery premises, owned by Mrs. Morrisey, being completely destroyed. The fire originated In the hotel, and, when discovered, had a good hold. The brigade was considerably handicapped by the poor water supply, while a strong westerly breeze was blowing. The fire was fanned by the wind and quickly enveloped the building and spread to McGruer and Co.'s premises on the opposite corner of High street and Dominion street. The brigade, seeing that it was impossible to save the hotel concentrated its efforts on McGruer s building, but were unable to check the progress of the fire, and the shop was burned to the ground. Nothwa® saved frora the hotel or the shop. The inmates of the hotel escaped in their night attire. McGruer and Co.'s stock was insured for £3OOO in the New Zealand Office and was valued at £BOOO. It W as valued at over £3OOO. ii,e licensee had £250 on his stock*) worth £SOO, and £750 on the furniture, valued at £IOOO, both in the Alliance Office.
